The League of Bicycling Voters provides a unified voice for cyclists to ensure that Austin’s infrastructure, laws, and policies address the concerns and safety of cyclists. A catalyst to the LOBV’s formation was the Mandatory Bicycle Helmet Laws of 1996 and 2006. Since that time, the LOBV has grown from a single-issue organization to a leader in providing community support for bicycle infrastructure in the Austin area.
The LOBV was a motivator for and key participant on the Street Smarts Task Force (SSTF), re-energized the Austin Bicycle Advisory Council (BAC), and has been instrumental in increasing the number of bike lanes and other facilities in the Austin area.
We continue to provide consistent community support for more bike lanes in Austin. Since beginning our focus on improving infrastructure in 2006, the number of bike lanes in Austin has increased by dozens of miles. Some examples of projects where we have played a significant role include:
- West 5th St
- West 6th St
- South Congress continuous uphill bike lane from Riverside to Oltorf – to be striped in the summer of 2011!
- Exposition Blvd
- Manor Rd
- Emerald Forest
- Lake Austin Blvd
The LOBV works on far more than just bike lanes; some examples of our community engagement and foundational work in support of Austin bicycling include:
- Organizing the 2nd Annual Austin Bike Summit (April 16, 2011): Reconnecting the local movement, and developing the advocate leaders of tomorrow.
- Hosting the Austin City Council Candidates Forum (April 4, 2011): Ensuring that bicycling is a leading local issue.
- Providing support for the passage of the November 2010 Austin Transportation Bond Election: Providing over $40 million to biking and walking facilities.
- Continued community support to implement the 2009 City of Austin Bike Plan and the Downtown Austin Plan
