To All:

The Bike Around Blanton town hall has been postponed. Last week, PTS met with campus planning and facilities management to discuss this area and both agreed that the meeting would be most beneficial if both firms hired by UT would be able to attend the follow up meeting. Walker and Associates who attended the first town hall and Sasaki, the firm hired to do the campus mobility study will be in town in February for a mobility task force meeting. Once the date has been finalized I will notify this group so that you can make arrangements to attend.

Thanks,
Blanca Juarez

Dear Rio Grande Street Neighbor,

The City’s contractor is continuing to make progress on the Rio Grande Street Reconstruction Project. Below are updates and descriptions of current activities by phase.

Phase 2 Activities (east side of Rio Grande from MLK to 22 ½ )
Temporary lane striping has been painted and all lanes are open within this section. Tree planting is still currently on hold due to City watering restrictions. Paving of the final layer of asphalt will occur once all major elements of the remaining phases are complete.

Phase 3 Activities (east side of Rio Grande from 22 ½ to 24th)
Utility work and curb installation are complete within this phase. The contractor will continue to work on installation of the sidewalks, irrigation system, and street lights. This phase is anticipated to be complete in mid-February.

Phase 4 Activities (west side of Rio Grande from 22 ½ to 24th)
This phase will include the remaining segment of the new water line, storm drain inlet installation, streetscape elements, and street reconstruction. Phase 4 will begin once Phase 3 is completed.

The project is currently estimated for completion in April 2012.

The project team appreciates your continued patience and cooperation. If you have any questions related to this project and the work being done by the City’s contractor please contact the Construction Inspector and/or Project Manager.

DAA Streetscapes and Transportation Committee:

The City of Austin is launching an initiative to make it easier for residents, commuters and tourists to find Downtown Austin destinations and attractions. The “wayfinding” improvement project will integrate a range of navigation and communication tools – such as such as signage, brochures, kiosks and smart-phone applications.

The system will underscore downtown’s unique and eclectic identity, as well as improve movement for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The community is invited to learn about the wayfinding improvement project for the downtown area at an informational on January 17. The meeting will introduce wayfinding and provide examples of how wayfinding systems have been developed for other cities, followed by a short question-and-answer session.

Wayfinding Project Public Meeting
Tuesday, January 17
6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Dougherty Arts Center
1110 Barton Springs Road
Light refreshments provided

Free visitor parking within walking distance includes the lot at East Riverside and Lee Barton drives; the Jack & Adams Bike Shop, 1210 Barton Springs Road; and One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Road. Bus Service is available on northbound and southbound Route 30, which has a stop in front of the Dougherty Arts Center.

Background
In September 2011, the City Council authorized hiring MERJE, a Philadelphia-based consulting firm, to lead a multi-disciplined team, including Austin-based McCann Adams Studio, Estilo Communications, Gannett Fleming and I T Gonzales Engineers, to create and implement a wayfinding system in the downtown area.
